abstract

in this work, we describe an adjunction between the comma category of set-based monads under the v -powerset monad and the category of associative lax extensions of set-based monads to the category of v -relations. in the process, we give a general construction of the kleisli extension of a monad to the category of v-relations.

A cottage industry of lax extensions

In this work, we describe an adjunction between the comma category of Set-based monads under the V -powerset monad and the category of associative lax extensions of Set-based monads to the category of V -relations. In the process, we give a general construction of the Kleisli extension of a monad to the category of V-relations.

Lax Extensions of Coalgebra Functors

We discuss the use of relation lifting in the theory of setbased coalgebra. On the one hand we prove that the neighborhood functor does not extend to a relation lifting of which the associated notion of bisimilarity coincides with behavorial equivalence. On the other hand we argue that relation liftings may be of use for many other functors that do not preserve weak pullbacks, such as the monot...

Extensions in the theory of lax algebras

Recent investigations of lax algebras—in generalization of Barr’s relational algebras—make an essential use of lax extensions of monad functors on Set to the category Rel(V) of sets and V-relations (where V is a unital quantale). For a given monad there may be many such lax extensions, and different constructions appear in the literature. The aim of this article is to shed a unifying light on t...

From Lax Monad Extensions to Topological Theories

We investigate those lax extensions of a Set-monad T = (T,m, e) to the category V-Rel of sets and V-valued relations for a quantale V = (V,⊗, k) that are fully determined by maps ξ : TV → V . We pay special attention to those maps ξ that make V a T-algebra and, in fact, (V,⊗, k) a monoid in the category SetT with its cartesian structure. Any such map ξ forms the main ingredient to Hofmann’s not...

Lax extensions of coalgebra functors and their logic

We discuss the use of relation lifting in the theory of set-based coalgebra and coalgebraic logic. On the one hand we prove that the neighborhood functor does not extend to a relation lifting of which the associated notion of bisimilarity coincides with behavioral equivalence. On the other hand we argue that relation liftings may be of use for many other functors that do not preserve weak pullb...

A Cottage Industry of Software Publishing: Implications for Theories of Composition

This note explores the use of UNITY-based theories to facilitate a cottage industry of software publishing. The requirements for such an industry are discussed, the appropriateness of UNITY specification and compositional theories for these requirements are analyzed, and further research opportunities in this area are identified. This work is based on joint work with Beverly Sanders, and the id...
